About

An Indian classical and semi-classical vocalist, Moumita Mitra, born in 1980, has learnt hindustani music for a few years under the conscientious guidance of maestro Late Pt. A. Kannan of Kairana gharana. Later, she learned from Sri Anjan Majumdar for 13 years. Presently, she is learning under the guidance of Sri Subhashish Mukherjee, a senior disciple of Late Pt. Manas Chakraborty.

She has worked as a hindustani vocal music teacher/performer at Embassy of India, Beijing, China, for 3 years (2015-2018). She has worked as a guest lecturer of Khayal (Hindustani vocal music) at Rabindrasangeet Dept. of Rabindra Bharati University for 2 years (2013-2015).

She has also visited Afghanistan twice for one month each time as a guest teacher of Music at Afghanistan National Institute of Music, Kabul, Afghanistan (2013 & 2014). She was selected as an examiner of Hindustani vocal music at Rabindra Sangeet Dept. of Rabindra Bharati University.

She possesses an outstanding voice and has a distinguishing ‘gayaki’. She has completed M.A. in Hindustani classical vocal music (Khayal). She is a well-known ‘A’ Grade artiste in “Khayal” and a ‘B-High’ Grade artiste in “Thumri/Dadra” of All India Radio. Apart from having a performing experience of more than 13 years, she has also acquired an experience of more than 5 years as a teacher of Hindustani vocal music. She is a Junior research fellowship recipient in “Khayal” from the Ministry of Culture under the India Government.

Achievements:

  1. She has been conferred the title “Adwitiya” in All Bengal Music Competition organized by Anandabazar and Shalimar.
  2. She is the first female vocalist to perform in a concert organized by Rauf Ansari Foundation and All Pakistan Music Conference in Lahore after 1960.
  3. She has received Girija Devi Viksit Award at Thumri Utsav by VSK Baithak in 2013.

Performances:

To name some of the performances by Moumita, she has performed in prestigious classical music concerts all over India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kuwait and China.

  1. In China, she was appointed as the Vocal Music teacher/performer at the Embassy of India, Beijing. Apart from teaching music, she performed at several concerts in Beijing.
  2. In Pakistan, she performed at concerts organized by APMC & Rauf Ansari Foundation, Sampoorna in Lahore and Karachi in the year 2008.
  3. In Afghanistan, she presented Jugalbandi/Duet with her husband Sri Sayak Barua (Sarode player) at the French Institute and Indian Embassy, Kabul.
  4. In Kuwait, she presented a Jugalbandi/Duet with Carnatic classical vocals (with Lalitha Varadarajan) at a music conference organized by SABHA.
  5. She performed at Habitat Centre, IIC Thumri Festival, at Delhi, organized by Sahitya Kala Parishad, India Govt. and VSK Baithak.
  6. She has also performed at Hindustani Sangeet Kalakara Mandali (HSKM), Bangalore.

  1. Performed as a title music artiste in ‘Dhondo’ (a telefilm on Tara Muzik).
  2. Background vocalist in ‘Porojibon’{borojibon} (a telefilm on Tara Music) and ‘Shudhu Tomari Jonno’ (short telefilm on Etv Bangla).
  3. Performed in various TV channels like Tara Muzik (Jalshaghor, Anjali), Doordarshan Kolkata – DD7 (Live performance and interview on Sokal Sokal).
